New Year Diving Safari

New Year of 2006 we met at Baikal on the ship in the diving Safari. Yes, that's right! Nobody wonders when people celebrate New Year on the cruises somewhere in Thailand or Maldives. Why is Baikal any worse? And it's in fact more natural to have your New Year under snowy Christmas tree, when under coconut palm. Warm all-weather ship "Valerie" with two-people rooms and big common room, good Siberian cuisine, champagne, good company, and underwater Christmas tree, and real decorated tree on the shore of the lake.
30.12.2005, Day 1. The first question that the ship crew was asked is: "Did you remember the tree and champagne?!". Everything is ready and ship shining with lights leaves. It's frosty outside, but it's warm aboard. Both dives deserved "Hurray!", they took place at two best dive-sites. Thankfully there was no wind.
31.12.2005. What's going to happen today? It's a lot warmer, not yesterday's -25°C, but just -10°C. Ship parks north to cape Sobolei. The action will take place here. First we did a dive, so that everyone not familiar with this place could evaluate it. There is tremendous underwater amphitheater with huge gates leading into underwater canyon.
We chose the tree on the shore and spend pour time preparing for New Year's. Also we decorate another tree that would be taken underwater. It's getting dark. We are lucky, because weather stays nice and not windy. We're leaving for the night dive. There we perform settle tree in the middle of the amphitheatre and dance around it, and drink champagne. You really need to experience it, because it's indescribable. When we came back on the surface, we were met with fireworks and nest bottle of champagne! The night was spent dancing around the tree on the shore, delicious New Year's Dinner and sauna for the fans of one famous Russian movie dedicated to the New Year's celebration.
1.1.2006 It was decide not to dive today, because emotions were already overflowing, and we woke up too late. After all it's New Year's Day! We walked in taiga, had a really good meal. A lot of us felt sorry that we gathered only for 3 days. This year's safari will be longer! Join us for New Year 2007 in Siberia, Baikal, ship, safari, with club "BaikalTek" - it's amazing!

One can quickly lose the skills. The habit to dive from a boat makes you relax. During the last three years, we haven’t had any deep trimix in Listvyanka. Time to catch up! (Gennadi’s comment: “That’s true. All the deep dives in the last three years were made from the safari boats”). And now, it is December again, the freest time to dive “for yourself”. Be it Covid or not, there is a lot of work in summer, as usual. So, the intensive preparation has begun! (Gennadi’s comment: “The idea is to dive VERY deep!”)

The two weeklong “coronavirus” diving safaris in June were technical ones. So, technical diving is always there. BaikalTek is a technical dive center, with Trimix facility TDI & IANTD. However, it does not mean that there is no place for recreation, photography, filming and other kinds of divers. The other way round: we pay attention to everyone’s need and interests, and are ready to accompany you in your diving any time.

The BaikalTek instructors often meet the seals under the ice because they dive often. A ‘normal’ diver is rarely so lucky. Jean from Switzerland is one of the lucky guys. Though it was his first Olkhon Ice Safari at Lake Baikal, he saw a lot: huge ice shapes, moving ice mass, dancing planaria… and finally, a seal!
